GeoAge Patented Data Collection Solution
A system for automating the gathering of field information that describes the condition of specific geographical locations at specific times via a field information recording device having a GPS receiver for the recording and assignment of the space-time coordinates as information is gathered. The information and space-time coordinates are transmitted to a management center for processing over a communication network. Upon receipt, the field information is integrated into a geographic database such that the information generates a template showing the current state or condition of the identified geographical location on an automated basis. The template and the associated geographical portion of the geographical database are distributed to users via the Internet, intranet or other communication means.

GeoAge was founded by Professors Jerry Merckel, David Lambert and John Alexander, all associated with the University of North Florida's (UNF) College of Computing, Engineering & Construction. The founders devised a method of communication robust enough to survive one of these events and capable of deployment under the most adverse conditions. Over many years they developed a solution, based on the following combination of technologies:
  • Capture of field data, using personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablet or notebook computers and/or automated, intelligent sensors and transmission along with Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) record of time and location

  • Integration of field-captured data into a geospatial (GIS) database

  • Communication of the development of the incident and progress of the response, immediately and continuously, to all authorized personnel having Internet access

A patent for the MERS technology was applied for by UNF and in 2001 GeoAge was incorporated in the state of Florida. The patent, number 6,574,561, was issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on June 3, 2003 UNF has granted an exclusive license to GeoAge for the commercialization of the technology.

GeoAge Governor's New Product Award

Jacksonville, FL -- March 8, 2005 -- GeoAge, Inc. was awarded the 2005 Governor's New Product Award in the Small Company Category for its patented Mobile Emergency Response System (MERS). The Governor's New Product Award program was created to honor Florida inventors in the design and development of new products, machines, processes or materials. Administered by the Florida Professional Engineers in Industry, winners are selected based upon:

• Level of sales and the actual or anticipated economic impact on the state
• Innovative use of engineering principles, in creativity, technology and quality
• Improved function with respect to savings, productivity, energy and safety

The GeoAge Mobile Emergency Response System (MERS) is a fully integrated suite of applications that facilitate the collection and analysis of field data. The underlying technology within MERS covers a process of collecting data from a hand-held device or mounted sensors, stamping it with a time and location, recording the information in a database, and allowing clients to access the data using the Internet. The ability to rapidly and accurately collect information linked to location and time, synchronize and display the information in a spatial context is what makes MERS so powerful.

The MERS technology has proved to be an outstanding success. During 2004, Florida Department of Health (FDOH) used the GeoAge MERS in over 4500 assessments to respond to Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan.
